The Birqash Camel Market, about an hour outside Cairo, is one of the largest in the Middle East. Every Friday and Sunday, hundreds of camels, mostly from Sudan, are auctioned to the highest bidder, whether for the meat industry, tourism, or self-sufficient farmers.

With many families in Egypt living on no more than 5,000 Egyptian pounds (around 100 USD) per month, a single camel – depending on its health, age, and overall quality – can sell for as much as 80,000 Egyptian pounds (over 1,600 USD).
